Ruth also served as a Cub Scout Leader, and was a volunteer in the first grade at the Black Creek Elementary School. She also worked as an aide at the Black Creek Village Library. Ruth was the first recipient of the Fox Cities Volunteer Educator Award in 1998.

She is survived by one daughter, Helen Hanson, Black Creek; one son, Steve Hanson, Black Creek; two sisters-in-law, Georgiana Hanson, Sturgeon Bay; and Mary Ann Hanson, Florida; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
