Robert Keune

d. June 13, 2020

Robert "Bob" Keune, aged 76, passed away while surrounded by family at home on June 13, 2020.

As a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend to many, and caretaker of the earth, Bob’s quiet but powerful presence reached far beyond the farm he worked with his wife, Jean, for nearly fifty years. It reflected his personality well that, even as other parts of his body struggled toward the end of his life, his heart remained strong.

Bob was born July 10, 1943, son of Milton “Bede” and Bessie Keune (nee Stewart) of Seymour. He attended UW-Madison and joined the Army Reserve for two years. He married Jean Maass on July 6, 1968, and was briefly a high school math teacher before he and Jean purchased a farm between Seymour and Freedom, where he lived for the rest of his life. Bob loved fly fishing for trout and played the autoharp. He was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Seymour and the Wisconsin Pork Producers. His innovative techniques on the farm were marked by receiving the Pork All-American award in 1984. For ethical reasons, he brought organic and ecologically sensitive methods to the farm well before organic farming became popular. Now led by his son Paul, Keune Organic Meats continues his legacy. Over the years, the farm warmly welcomed visitors from near and far, and it has attracted helpers who became close friends.

Bob is survived by his wife, Jean Keune (nee Maass), Seymour; his children: Jon (Tzu-lun Tsai) Keune of East Lansing, MI, Amy (Sean) Smith and their children: Jackson and Valerie of Dayton, OH; Christina Denis of Seymour, and Paul (Diane Rauterkus) Keune and their children: Greyson and Maximus of Seymour; his siblings: Steve Keune of Seymour, and Mary Fischer (nee Keune) of Townsend, WI.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; and son-in-law Brad Denis.

A private graveside service will be held, followed by a public memorial service at a later date. The family would like to thank Ascension At Home and especially Nurse Molly for their wonderful support through hospice care. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice in Bob’s name.
