Gary "Squirrely" Ver Voort, age 74, passed away after a lengthy battle with congestive heart condition on Tuesday, March 3. He was born May 15, 1951, in Appleton, WI, son of the late Peter and Ruth Ver Voort.
Gary was a farmer at heart but also did some carpentry work after retiring from farming in 1999. He returned to farming for a few years in the late 2000's with the Oneida Nation Farm. If any family member or friend had a need, it was Gary they would call. He loved riding his Harley and was a loving husband, father and a trustworthy friend. He was a huge part of the Oneida Farmers Market and assisted the OFM staff as well as the vendors with anything they needed. In his younger years he enjoyed challenging his brothers with a Rubeck cube challenge, which he always won. In his retirement he liked puzzling and could do a 2,500-3,000-piece crossword puzzle within a couple of weeks. He enjoyed antiquing and when asked what he is going to do with all that stuff he replied, 'That's my son's problem". He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. He touched many lives with his caring and thoughtfulness for others.
He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 49 years Karen 'Hurst' Ver Voort and his parents Peter and Ruth (Meulemans) Ver Voort; three siblings, Fran Ver Voort, Darlene Ver Voort (Price) and Dan Ver Voort; a nephew Joshua Verbeten; and numerous aunts and uncles
Gary is survived by his beloved sons Tyler and Sean, and rescue cats Black and Softail. Gary is also survived by three siblings: Rosemary (Dale) Van Elsen, Mary Kay (Bill) Roskom, and Bill (Marcia Lowry) Ver Voort. He is further survived by his loving siblings: Susan Hurst, Linda (Roy Hartjes) Hurst, Steven Hurst, Lori Bevers, Bill (Kelli) Hurst, and Lisa (Craig Baker) Hurst. Karen cherished along with numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Per
